Buildings insurance policies usually cover financial loss caused by storm damage. We say that a storm generally involves violent winds, usually accompanied by rain, hail or snow. In some cases, we may find there’s a storm without there being high winds. There are occasions where rain, hail, or snowfall by itself can constitute storm. Any extreme form of bad weather has the potential to cause damage to a property.

Wind

Damaging winds are often called “straight-line” winds to differentiate the damage they cause from tornado damage. Strong thunderstorm winds can come from a number of different processes. Most thunderstorm winds that cause damage at the ground are a result of outflow generated by a thunderstorm downdraft. Damaging winds are classified as those exceeding 50-60 mph.

Hail

By definition, hail damage is any damage resulting from hailstones and hailstorms. Hailstones that are large enough to cause substantial damage to homes, automobiles & property. In many parts of the US, hailstorms are a way of life. For many homeowners it’s not a question of whether a hailstorm will hit, but when damaging hail will hit. Many areas in the U.S. receive hail six or more times a year and many homes are damaged every year.

You may think that just because you can’t see any signs of damage, or because your roof isn’t leaking, you don’t have damage. Remember, hail damage can be particularly difficult to identify and many homeowners discover major roofing damage years down the road, after it’s too late to file a storm damage claim with their insurance company. If you have any reason to suspect hail damage after a storm, you should have a full property damage inspection performed by a reputable contractor, right away.

Water

Flood damage is when a large amount of water overflows beyond its normal confines. This can be due to a storm surge, tidal wave, river flood, or flash flood, when water rises due to wind or rain.

It is important to report damage from water to SERGEANTS quickly. Sergeants will assist in filing the claim process with your insurance company. Many insurance companies have a strict timeline in which a loss must be reported or they are automatically denied. .

Fire

Fire damage refers to the physical damage to a property as a result of burning. This damage may either be directly caused by the flames or could occur due to smoke and other corrosive substances emitted by the fire.

In terms of insurance, fire damage is one of the types of coverage offered in property insurance.
